Abstract, geometric and patterned tile is a species that consistently stops us dead in our Instagram scroll. But do you really blame us? Whether understated or the center of attention, this is one trend that is giving floors, backsplashes and bathrooms a moment to shine. The popularity of this genre is gaining speed and now goes way beyond cement tiles to a whole new crew of geometric shapes, interesting layouts and statement-making patterns.
And while we will always hold a torch for the classics, these new tile trends just might make us say buh-bye to subway tile. Or at least let’s see other people. If you need any persuading, we’ve rounded up 13 designs that are crushing the geometric/ patterned/ all of the above tile game. Scroll through for a look at how designers are incorporating them into their spaces.
Geometry was not my favorite subject in school but in terms of tile, I’m all in. Hexagon shapes are huge as well as triangle patterns, rhombuses, diamonds, stars, et al. All those acute angles make for a high-impact, uber-modern look.

Patterned tile is not a new trend. It has been around for centuries and patterned cement tile has taken laundry room and bathroom floors by storm as of late. But that niche is getting blown wide open now with a larger assortment of options and styles. Additionally, their use is shifting to larger, more sweeping applications. Instead of a small, oven backsplash, for instance, we’re seeing full counter to ceiling installations. This look is gorgeous in subdued neutrals or statement-making with bold, contrasting colors. Pick your poison… you can’t go wrong.

If you are someone that shies away from pattern or prefers a more subdued look, a classic tile laid in an unexpected way can be so gorgeous. Think subway tile stacked vertically or penny rounds laid in a geometric pattern. Playing with the finish is also a great way to get in on this trend. Matte finishes are gaining traction as well as tile with an uneven texture that looks handmade. And the shape of traditional subway tile is getting a modern update to a longer, skinnier rectangle. So if you just can’t quit the classics, these iterations might be for you.
