An Interview With Ravenhill Studio

If you’ve followed the recent work of industry-leading designers, you’ve likely come across fixtures made by Ravenhill Studio. Known for their sculptural collection of chandeliers, pendants, and sconces, the Los Angeles-based lighting makers have become a favorite of everyone from Amber Lewis to Cortney Bishop. Not to mention our own Anastasia Casey who sourced Ravenhill’s hood chandelier for her Austin dining room.

The studio began as a one-man operation led by Brendan Ravenhill but has since grown into a team of 20, producing made-to-order fixtures out of a 15,000 square-foot converted factory. We were thrilled to catch up with their team for a quick chat covering the creative process that’s put their lighting collections on the map.

An Interview With Ravenhill Studio

Tell us about Ravenhill Studio, from its origins to today.

We have that classic started-out-of-a-garage story, but in our case, it was a hallway alcove in a cantilevered apartment on a hill in Echo Park. Today we’re 20 people strong, and we run our shop out of a factory space that was once a Capitol Records pressing plant. We specialize in lighting, and our designs are driven by an exploration of material, function, and manufacturing methods.

We’re so inspired by the handmade nature of Ravenhill’s pieces. How would you describe the signature characteristics of your work?

Our designs are devoid of excess and ornament. It sometimes takes years to release a new family of lights because we’re so particular about the design and sourcing of every detail. We work with a network of local fabricators to create the custom components in our fixture families. We’re inspired to create in a world already full of things because we believe that well-designed objects embody original ideas. We find great reward in making thoughtful work, and we’re proud to build all of our pieces in the USA.

Walk us through the creative process of conceptualizing a new design.

We learn so much from the interior designers and architects we work with. The input of our clients directly informs our design process and inspires us—whether to release new colorways or variations on our existing lighting families or to create totally new families. For example, our new Slide Family of lights was a direct response to repeated client requests for a flush mount fixture, and we’ve been thrilled by its reception.

The Hood chandelier is one of our favorite Ravenhill Studio fixtures and hangs in our IDCO founder’s home. Do you have a favorite piece at the moment?

Our Ada Sconce in Oak has been a labor of love, and it’s an incredibly versatile fixture. Our standard folded metal Ada Sconces are some of our best-selling fixtures, and we wanted to introduce a version of this popular sconce with a warmer natural finish. We still use an aluminum body, paired with two louvered panels of FSC certified White Oak with a pronounced ridge that tapers to a thin edge profile. Brendan is a wooden boat builder and sculptor by training, and you can see those roots in the design of our Ada Sconce in Oak.

You’ve established such a strong relationship with the interior design community over the years. Tell us what industry partnership means to Ravenhill Studio.

This work is all about relationships. We couldn’t do our work without the network of fabricators around L.A. who we work with daily or the interior designers and architects who are always pushing our work forward and in new directions.
