Trending: Checkerboard Flooring

Featured image via Studio McGee

Earlier this year, we outlined the biggest interior design trends to watch in 2021. Our predictions ranged from arched entryways to the rise of muted purple, but one trend we’re currently honing in on? Checkerboard tile flooring. This retro-inspired design feature isn’t just for kitchens (although we love it there), but has now found its way into dining rooms, entryways, mudrooms, and more. Some of the most influential designers have started to put their own spin on the checkerboard flooring look, and we’ve rounded up our favorite moments right there. This ‘trend’ is a lesson in the staying power of the classics.

True story: reDesign home’s Laurie Renovation is one of our most beloved project reveals of all time. Inspired by a travel photo from the South of France, this project came together with a distinctly European influence using a honed marble and limestone pattern for the kitchen and pantry flooring.

You might have seen this Modern Tudor home by Bria Hammel in the pages of Traditional Home, and not without good reason. It’s a home with interest and character around every corner, including the beautifully designed sunroom. The Bria Hammel team opted for a marble checkerboard pattern tile floor, giving new life to a classic look.

Last year we posted this image from O’Hara Interiors to our Instagram page, and you all went WILD. To be fair, it’s one of the coolest seating nooks we’ve ever seen, designed with  contrast, balance, and warm tones galore. There’s so much to love, but the porcelain black and white checkerboard flooring is a total standout.

Cara and Tom Fox used checkerboard flooring to create a visual transition, separating the mudroom from the kitchen in their client’s new home.  The key takeaway? There’s no space too small for a touch of checkerboard tile.

Once again, Bria Hammel put her own spin on a classic look with checkerboard flooring in her client’s mudroom. Aiming to create a high contrast look while maintaining the traditional feel of the home, she added classic black and white tiled flooring as a nod to the history of the house.

Contrary to popular belief, checkerboard flooring isn’t just for interiors. In fact, we’re seeing it all over the outdoor entertaining scene, like this set-up designed by Studio McGee.
