Designing a Vintage Art Gallery Wall

Last week we took you inside my low-key favorite corner of the lake house: the bunk room. It acts as a bonus space to host an extra guest or two, but we also carved out an office nook for a dedicated workspace.

The problem was that our built-in desk faced a completely blank wall that desperately needed visual interest. After running through some options, I decided to design a vintage art gallery wall featuring one-of-a-kind pieces from Vintage Art Room, and I’m showing you how it all came together.

Designing a Vintage Art Gallery Wall

I’ve always been “team vintage” for the richness and character a piece of time-honored artwork can bring to a space. There’s just something about vintage that can’t be manufactured. Plus, I love imagining all the homes a piece of art has hung in before it came to ours.

As I’m selecting art for a space, I like a balance of about 30% vintage art, 30% family heirloom art, 30% living artist (preferably someone local I know), and 10% prints. My grandmother acquired an unreal collection of art when she lived in Paris, so family heirlooms are always an easy one to incorporate. But when it comes to sourcing vintage, I’ve really come to know and trust the quality of work from Vintage Art Room.

About Vintage Art Room

Vintage Art Room is an online shop specializing in 20th-century fine art from Scandinavia. The shop is run by a classically trained artist, Elaine, who brings her discerning eye for condition, subject matter, technique, and quality to each piece she curates.

I love Vintage Art Room’s mission to offer fine art at accessible price points, which has been one of the primary reasons I’ve been able to grow my personal collection. I typically gravitate towards landscape artwork, but her collections include abstracts, portraits, still life, animals, and florals. The pieces from Vintage Art Room always come beautifully framed and are available for shipping worldwide.

Styling the Artwork

Once I made all my landscape art selections, it was a matter of adding a few extras here and there for balance. I brought in a wood frame with a gorgeous silhouette, a vintage tennis racket, a square Newgate clock, and a woven hat as the finishing touch. For installation, I always use Command velcro strips! They’re nice and secure, easy to remove, and keep the art flush against the wall instead of hanging off a hook.

I’m really thrilled with how this bunk room workspace turned out, and (no surprise) the addition of vintage delivered all the character we needed.
