IDCO Lake House Design Plan: Living Room

With several months of work under our belt over at the IDCO Lake House, we’ve learned that renovation is not for the faint of heart. It’s been a journey of both high and lows as we navigate unexpected issues, like the foundation work scheduled to take place later this month. But despite the halted progress, we’re just really grateful for the chance to bring this lake house back to life. We know it’ll be worth the time, energy and investment as we see it all come together, one room at a time.

So far, we’ve given you a look at design plans for the kitchen + the entryway + the exterior, and today we’re stepping inside the IDCO Lake House living room. I’ve been itching to show you everything I’m eyeing for this space, but first, let’s take a look at what we’re working with.

Continuing the initial inspiration of “elevated camp,” the living space will be layered, warm and thoughtfully collected. I want the design to lean more modern than our Austin home, while feeling really curated with storied vintage finds at every turn. Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite design inspiration for the IDCO Lake House living room.

The first step in the design process was saying goodbye to those yellow walls. We painted Sherwin Williams Greek Villa as our creamy, neutral base. I went with the flat finish for more of a plaster feel in the Sherwin Williams Emerald® Designer Edition for it’s durability, coverage ability and clean-ability. After having the walls smoothed, we painted the walls, ceiling, baseboards and trim in Greek Villa. I love the tone on tone simplicity of it, so your eye goes straight out to the lake. We also installed the Palka Signature floors (more on that below) throughout the house. From there, we plan to layer in this Revival vintage rug with shades of warm vanilla beige, graphite, blush and just a hint of blue.

Neva Corner Sectional in Olive

Neva Corner Sectional in Olive

The living room furniture layout will involve this Neva Corner Sectional in Olive, two vintage leather chairs and the Canta Coffee Table from Lulu & Georgia. Just like our Austin living room, we opted for a Samsung Frame TV to be installed just above this Crate & Barrel Sideboard that will serve as our TV console. As the primary gathering spot of the home, I want it to strike a balance of elevated yet super approachable, where our friends and family can cozy up and feel right at home. A few of my favorite pieces I’ve sourced for the living room are this stunning console table (that shipped SO quickly in case you’re looking for something in stock) that will go behind the sofa and this sculptural floor lamp. I’ve had my eye on both for a year now and am so thrilled they’ll be the pieces to add interest and unexpected elements into the space.

Sourcing vintage is a key part of my design plan throughout the lake house, and I knew I wanted to find some standout pieces for the living room. I was lucky enough to come across this set of vintage wood and leather chairs and immediately knew the search was over. They’re just as comfortable as they are pretty, but my #1 favorite feature is the buckle details set on the back. These chairs are going add so much character.

The living room layout is a blank canvas in every sense of the word. We’ve got a decent square footage to work with, so we’ll be breaking it up into a combined living and dining area. We’ll dedicate a post to the dining plans down the line, but just in case you’re curious, I’ve sourced this Jenni Kayne 96 inch Dining Table in Oak paired with their 84 Inch Dining Bench in Oak.

We’ll be running Flooret’s Signature luxury vinyl plank throughout the entire house in their Palka line. It’s a super wide plank, totally waterproof, a lighter color with lots of depth and dimension. For my “elevated camp” vibe in this house, I knew these were the perfect product. They’ll stand up to wear and tear, dripping bodies coming in from the lake, and dogs running around all day. Their pre-attached premium backing make install super easy, and I’m grateful for Riley and Taylor from Campbell House for volunteering to help us put these in!
