Small business Saturday is particularly personal to us here at IDCO. Our clients range from creative entrepreneurs to shop owners, and we’ve experienced behind the scenes the love that goes into running a small business. Shopping small is not just a holiday to us – it’s a way of life. Small Business Saturday is a movement toward a more ethical, more eco-conscious way of life.
This year, 100% of our holiday shopping will be done at small businesses. We vow to support those businesses that support us. Those dreamers and doers that source hand crafted pieces and believe in fair trade. Those crafters and makers who believe slow is always better. Those entrepreneurs and families who sacrifice so much to share their craft.
In leu of our traditional gift guides this year, we’re sticking to our roots and focusing on small businesses. Below, I’ve rounded up some of my personal favorite gift ideas for the holiday season. Many of the items I already own and the rest are definitely at the top of my wish list.
The very best gifts are the ones people can actually use – and these super sturdy and equally chic straw bags are no exception. Ideal for the farmers market or thrifting, the open top design makes it easy to drop your items in. There is nothing better than making mundane tasks feel a little more special, and this tote will do just that. I picked up my first one last weekend at the Stone & Acre event showcasing their darling project The Little House.
More of a wish list item (you’ll bump this one to the top of your list) than a likely gift, I am obsessed with my striped pom pom blanket. NO one said Small Business Saturday was exclusively for gift buying, right? Make this one a gift for yourself. We’ve had one on our bed for a couple months now and it has such a nice weight to it, is so soft, and makes such a statement. For ordering reference, the white is truly a bright white, and the natural color is a bit warmer.
These stunning towels make the perfect hostess gift. Priced super reasonably (even before the sale), these Turkish towels work perfectly as a small throw blanket to toss over a chair, as beach towels, or even bath towels. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect set to use in our bathroom because they are impossibly soft, super durable, and look oh-so-chic hanging on the wall.
High quality throw pillows are what differentiate a home. They insantly elevate a space from “nice” to “Instagram worthy”. The key is always a down insert (which is included in this beauty) and 100% natural fibers. The neutral color palette of this one could complement any home, and there is something so comforting as gifting a handmade pillow to a loved one.
Every home can use more baskets. They are one of the few decor items that truly serve multiple purposes and always elevate a space from cluttered to chic. These wave baskets are particularly stunning works of art, and super unusual. Style them with towels in the bathroom, keep one by the front door for mail, or for throw blankets in the living room.
The geometric precision and natural elements of these pieces of art make for a super interesting focal point for any wall. I always like gifting my sister art. She has a growing collection that she rearranges constantly – and this sculptural piece is an unexpected element layered in.
The perfect gift for your closest girlfriends, these 14k gold filled studs are sustainably made in Portland. I love that they are minimal enough to wear every day, but are a sweet reminder that you are so well loved. But my favorite part is seeing them individually as a cool geometric symbol.
One of my fail-proof, super well-loved, always a good idea gifts is an assortment of fun greeting cards. It’s something everyone always needs, but never has. Curate your own collection to gift to a friend using cards produced by local artists, printers, and letterpress studios.
I’ve long been a fan of Brooklyn Slate Co. (one of their serving boards was one of the first gifts Quinn ever gave me). So when I found this hand carved cheese knife, I had to add it to the collection. These are a great gift for dad, especially when paired with a few wheels of soft cheese (like from our favorite, Marin French Cheese).
This one is for the dudes in your life because, they often get left out in the beauty and grooming department. Carved from maple and walnut woods right here in Texas, this will quickly become his newest obsession.
Martha Oakes’ artwork and products are astonishing. I’m lucky enough to own a few of her pieces (like this, this, this and this). I think these double layered linen throw blankets are the perfect piece. Unlike anything I’ve seen anywhere before, they are super soft, substantial, and completely one-of-a-kind. Her petal print feels one part floral, one part African mud cloth. And they are absolutely perfect.
While any of The Southern Loom’s collection would be the ULTIMATE gift, this one might be a gift to yourself. I now own three of Laura’s pieces and they could not be more perfect. I’ve been seriously eying Marcel and at 25% off, it’s too good to pass up.
Elizabeth Volk is not only one of our dreamiest clients, she’s also becoming a full lifestyle brand. Her recent collaboration with Slow North brought us the most lovely scents in slow burning, soy candles hand poured here in Austin. Handcrafted candles are the perfect gift for anyone who already has everything. They’re a little luxury that gets used often.
There is something so simply elegant about these earrings, they are the perfect gift for your sister, girlfriend, mom or grandmother. They feel artsy and cool with an art deco edge. Once again, Elizabeth Volk knocks it out of the part with everyday pieces that feel elevated and sophisticated.
Pet lovers should not have to suffer from ugly dog beds. These stunning floor pillows from Wolf Nest are hand made of vintage mud cloth fabric in varying sizes. Order them stuffed with natural latex inserts or cover an existing bed.
