As we ring in the new year and usher in a new decade too, we are looking to the fresh new design trends on the horizon. These top design trends in 2020 are details we are seeing on Instagram, in shelter mags, in our favorite designer’s latest projects, and in our own homes too.
Admittedly, trend forecasting is one of our favorite pastimes and while it may be a bit of a guessing game, there also are some strong trends popping up that we are betting are going to be big this coming year. From warm earth tones to bold monochromatics, Grandmillenial style lampshades and kitchen islands with curves, see what the IDCO team is predicting will be the top design trends in 2020.

The eighties are back in a big way and if scrunchies + bike shorts weren’t the canary in the coal mine, the tubular furniture trend definitely is. Made up of scalloped silhouettes, rounded corners and ribbed frames, these pieces are perfect as a small accent piece or a major statement maker.

Texture isn’t going anywhere any time soon and we say the more the merrier. Layering in different tactile surfaces adds so much depth and interest, without the need for a ton of color.
This love of texture is evidenced by the resurgence of Bouclé. This textured curly wool fabric is having a major moment. In 2020, say goodbye to sheepskin and hello to cozy Bouclé.

As long-time fans of a good vintage piece, nothing makes us happier than a trend towards incorporating old + new. Vintage adds patina and history, while layering in personality to newer, more modern styles. There’s also the benefit of being better for the environment. With a growing emphasis on global warming and environmental impacts, we are always looking for ways to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices, both in our homes and lifestyle choices. Designing with vintage is a great way to do just that.
While on the topic of mixing vintage with modern, we can’t leave out Grandmillenial Style. It’s a little bit grannie, a little bit rock n’ roll. Ok, not so much rock n’ roll as modern. Think traditional styles like chintz and antiques reenvisioned in a modern way.

Previously we talked about a new kitchen color on the rise – Mushroom. In 2020, that warm neutral is part of a bigger grouping of earth tones. Think warmer, muddy palettes including beige, greige, olive, terra cotta, and brown everything.

When we think monochromatic, we tend to envision a see of pale neutrals. Now add BOLD to the front of that trend and you get full rooms in rich shades of the same color or a bathroom with dark tonal tile AND grout. This look is not for the faint of heart but man is it gorgeous.

Kitchens were on the brain this year as Anastasia renovated her builder kitchen into a fresh, trad meets modern (and totally on trend) space. One of those trends that is absolutely not going anywhere is the minimal + modern kitchen hood. It is clean-lined and architectural in feel, while complementing just about any style of kitchen. Even Amber Interiors is calling this a top design trend in 2020.

In the same vein as tubular furniture, rounded kitchen islands are starting to pop up in our Instagram feeds and we are VERY into it. They’ll be a top design trend in 2020. Rectangular islands have had their moment, let’s make way for the curvy girls.

We’re calling it here, pleated lampshades are BACK. See the above trend for all things texture or Grandmillenial style for further evidence and get ready to ditch those smooth lampshades in 2020. Anastasia just picked up this beautiful pleated shade that has a cool striped pattern to it to dress up this budget lamp. She’s revamping the upstairs family room and this was a key element. Full reveal hitting the blog in January! Pro Tip: They’re gonna collect dust. Use this to keep them clean.
